YHYS Fall Colloquium 2025

University of Oulu, Linnanmaa Campus
University of Oulu invites you to join the annual colloquium of the Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science (YHYS)! The event will be held in Oulu, Finland, on 24th–26th of November 2025.
The theme of this year’s colloquium is “Applied, Alongside, Against: Participatory, transdisciplinary, and critical approaches to environmental knowledge and action”. Our aim is to draw attention to transformative research that tackles environmental problems by transcending disciplinary boundaries and challenging injustices. Read more about the theme.
In addition to exciting discussions and workshops, the colloquium will include presentations from two keynote speakers: Rebecca Lave, Professor of Geography at Indiana University Bloomington, US, and Patrick Devine-Wright, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Exeter, UK.
Call for Sessions is now open
This is a warm invitation to submit your proposal for this year’s colloquium. The deadline for submissions is 15 May 2025 at 23:59 EEST.
Proposed session formats
The majority of sessions will be 90 minutes, but we have a limited number of 120-minute sessions. We encourage you to submit sessions in English, Finnish, Swedish, and Sámi. Sessions in one language can have individual talks in a different language, though this may present challenges for the audience. Sessions can take a variety of forms, including but not limited to:
- Open panels with paper presentations followed by a discussion
- Closed panels, where panelists are pre-selected to promote focused discussion on a specific topic
- Workshops with experimental formats that creatively engage participants in the topics being discussed
- Flip panels, where panelists, having uploaded a recording of their presentations to our online system for all attendees to view at their own pace and time prior to the conference, meet with interested attendees in Oulu for an extended discussion initiated by a discussant arranged by the session conveners.
These are suggested formats and we encourage you to think creatively about the structure of your session to best address the conference theme.
